The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
