The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
